Students Create a "Magical" Exhibition at OSilas Gallery

The fifth annual pARTners Exhibition opened at OSilas Gallery on Thursday night and will be on view through December 16. This exhibition is an art installation created by Eastchester and Tuckahoe high school students. Given the theme of “Once Upon a Time,” students with special needs, their peers and art teachers created individual works of art that culminated in this imaginative installation in collaboration with Concordia College students.

The students from Tuckahoe High School took their artistic inspiration from classic fairy tales and created stained glass windows, shields and a magic beanstalk that rises to great heights and disappears into the clouds–literally!  Tuckahoe art teacher Danielle Cacace stated, “This year’s theme of “Once Upon a Time” may have been the most exciting theme for students thus far.”  Of the opening reception she added, “We are very fortunate to have a strong and supportive community of parents, teachers, staff and administration at Tuckahoe High School that make the opening reception a night filled with fun and pride for our students.  It is a heartfelt moment for both myself and the students being able to see all of the hard work and collaboration on final display in the OSilas Gallery.”

The students from Eastchester High School created three-dimensional “tunnel” books for the exhibition that are based on regional folklore. The artwork they created for this exhibition references selected stories from an illustrated manuscript called "The Crawbucky Tales."  “These stories, mainly set between the time of the American Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, were compiled, re-told and illustrated by a Westchester area artist and historian Frank H. Pierson in the 1920's,” explained Eastchester High School art teacher Matthew Robinson. “Because of the opportunity provided by Concordia College and OSilas Gallery, our students can share their own unique vision of stories from our local history.”

pARTners 2017 is sponsored by The Heart of Neiman Marcus Foundation. The mission of The Heart of Neiman Marcus is to help bring enriching arts experiences to youth... because ART changes lives. OSilas is very grateful for the Foundation’s support of the Gallery’s youth programs.

Once Upon a Time will be on view through December 16 at OSilas Gallery, Concordia College. Gallery hours are Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday 12-5pm, Thursday 12-7pm and Saturday/Sunday 2-5pm (closed November 23-26 for the Thanksgiving Holiday). The Gallery is open to the public and admission is free. For more information about OSilas Gallery and its events and exhibitions, please visit
