Lay Deacon Program

The Concordia Lay Deacon Program (CLDP)  is a collaborative program between the East Coast Common Endeavor (ECCE) Districts of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and Concordia College-New York.

The program seeks to train lay leaders for ministries of word and service in the congregations of the ECCE districts. The CLDP consists of 10 online courses offered through Concordia College-New York taken over two years. In addition, Lay Deacons will complete 200 hours of service under the supervision of their pastor.

Registration/Application Steps

  1. Speak with your local pastor. If your congregation is vacant, speak with your District office.
  2. Review the deacon guidelines and complete the application.
  3. Send all application materials including the letter of recommendation from supervising pastor, approval letter from district, and signed copy of deacon guidelines to Concordia Lay Deacon Program Director.

Please note that you will permission from your home congregation’s pastor, and from your home district.

You will need to contact the office of your home district to receive permission to enroll in the program.

This program is currently only offered for members of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Congregations.

This program is a lay training program, as such your rostering status, though recognized by your district will not officially roster you as a LCMS church worker.

Certification for word and sacrament ministry is handled under the local discretion of your district. Please contact your local district office.

Lay Deacons serve at the behest of the local pastor, and under the authority of their District President. When changing congregations, you continued service will be contingent on the permission given by your new pastor and new district president.

Courses are $200/course. There are 10 core courses, which means that students can anticipate spending $2000 on coursework over the two-year program.
