B.A. in English—Writing Concentration
Woodstock, New York
“One of the best things about Concordia's English program is the flexibility. I have many interests aside from writing, and my program allows me to pursue these without worrying too much about credit requirements.”
Writing is a challenging, yet essential craft for any profession. How has Concordia helped you to become a better writer?
The English program at Concordia has helped me improve my writing in many ways. My Journalism course helped me be more concise and meaningful. The literature survey courses introduced me to many great works that have inspired my writing style, and demonstrated what excellent writing can achieve. And of course, the basic composition classes ironed out the wrinkles!
How has Concordia changed your ideas about yourself? My time at Concordia has given me a new understanding of myself, and my place in the world. There are so many new experiences, that one's whole outlook will change. Living with a total stranger freshman year made me understand the importance of compromise and cooperation. And after taking a heavy course load this semester, I've come to understand more of what I am capable of.
What has surprised you most about Concordia? I was very surprised by the accessibility of the faculty and staff at Concordia. In some other schools I visited, the Deans and Professors were cloistered in their offices, and often not available. At Concordia, it’s not at all uncommon to have lunch with the President, and every member of the faculty is imminently available for students.
What activities are you involved in outside of your English studies? I’m a member of Beta Sigma Psi, a National Lutheran Fraternity. Beta Sig sponsors events for the whole campus, and promotes Academics and Spirituality. We also take care of Trinity Square, a place provided on campus for reflection, prayer, or just a beautiful spot to walk by on the way to class! I've also been involved in Concordia Players, the theater group on campus. A highlight for me was the group's production of "Plaza Suite," by Neil Simon. Though I wasn't on the cast, I helped paint the set and find some props. Just seeing how a group of students, with very little faculty presence day by day, could make such a wonderful production happen really inspired me.
What are your plans after graduation? After graduation I hope to find a position on the editorial staff of a periodical. In the future I would like to attend graduate school and further study literature.
Name one piece of advice you’d give a new student at Concordia. If you take the time to become engaged, you'll make friends at every level. Almost anything you can imagine is possible, as long as you're willing to make it happen.
