Questions Before You Arrive

What sort of computer facilities does the campus offer?
Scheele Memorial Library is our technology hub, with computer workstations in the Information Commons and computer classrooms equipped with PCs and Macs. As we become an increasingly wireless campus, wireless hot spots will be expanded beyond the current library, dining hall, student center and residence hall locations.

Will I be able to get to the Internet from my room in the residence halls?
Yes. All of the rooms in the residence halls are equipped with jacks to get onto the campus network and the Internet. In order to connect, students will need a standard Ethernet network cable. You can find Ethernet cables at the campus bookstore or most electronics stores.

Does the College allow students to download music or other software?
Yes, but we expect our students to follow the laws of the land, to honor copyright laws, and to refrain from using pirated software. The College does not condone nor support activity that violates the law. In addition, the College’s firewall may prevent some types of file sharing that compromise network security.

What kind of computer should I bring to campus?
We recommend you bring a laptop with the following minimum specs:

Processor 1.73GHz Pentium Dual Core
Memory (RAM) 2 GB
Storage (Hard Drive) 120 GB Hard Drive or more
Other Built-in Support for 802.11b/g Wireless
Extended Warranty (it will pay for itself over the next 4 years)

Does the College offer student discounts on computer purchases?
Yes. Concordia is pleased to offer special rates on purchases from Dell. To shop their website, visit http://www.dell.com/edubuy and enter our Member ID, US29335451. If you prefer, you may call 888.987.3355 to speak to a Dell representative. Be sure to mention our Member ID, US29335451, to get the discount.

What software should we bring? Are there discounts for those purchases too?
We recommend purchasing Microsoft Office - Student Edition for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. This and other software can be purchased at a discount from JourneyEd (http://www.journeyed.com/select). But be sure to ask for the “Academic Version” which costs less than half the regular price.

What about Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware software?
As part of the fee structure, Concordia offers all students fully licensed versions of Symantec Anti-Virus and Webroot SpySweeper, two of the leading Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs on the market.

What about printing – how is that done?
If you are bringing a computer to campus we recommend you also bring an inkjet or personal laser printer with a supply of paper, ink and/or toner cartridges. Students may also use the computers and small laser jet printers in the library for small print jobs. Public access printers, like those in the library, may carry a charge for larger printing tasks.
