A Concordia College education will strengthen you intellectually, socially, and spiritually because each degree is built upon a solid foundation. Students complete requirements in the Concordia Distinctive, an integrated array of liberal arts courses. As a transfer student, it is in your best interest to take as many similar Distinctive courses—which you can refer to below—at your college to fill general education requirements. Once these courses have been fulfilled at your current institution, you will be able to focus on your core courses at Concordia.
The Concordia Distinctive—the General Education Curriculum of Concordia College-New York—is required of all students in programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree (the Education Program has modifications to meet New York State certification requirements). Programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree adapt this curriculum to meet their own specific requirements.
The primary goal of The Concordia Distinctive is to promote and enhance effective living in the contemporary world. More specifically, The Concordia Distinctive seeks to:
- develop critical thinking skills;
- enhance problem-solving abilities;
- develop the ability to communicate knowledge and ideas;
- develop and integrate technological literacy;
- promote the ability to work in a collaborative setting;
- promote an understanding of the relation of God, through Christ, to the world;
- promote understanding and appreciation of God’s creation and the preservation of the environment; and
- increase understanding and appreciation of expressions of the human spirit.
At the heart of The Concordia Distinctive is a 21-credit core of integrated learning courses designed to establish and maintain the concept of a learning community at Concordia. More specifically, the Integrated Learning Courses seek to provide a common venue for:
- realizing the general objectives of The Concordia Distinctive;
- introducing students to the rich range of liberal arts perspectives on human thought and behavior;
- building toward advanced study in academic disciplines, especially those supported by the programs of study offered at Concordia College;
- developing and enhancing communication skills,
- teaching and developing skills for success in college and beyond;
- engaging in experiential learning; including service components;
