Financial Aid Planning Calendar

Start the financial aid process as early as possible, then sit back and enjoy the anticipation of the start of classes. The following calendar is intended to before your senior year or the months just before you transfer.

Month
Task
January

Submit your completed FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1.  We strongly recommend that students file their FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov or you can submit a signed paper copy. Estimated income and asset aid data is fine when filing, but the accuracy of any aid estimate is directly related to the accuracy of your data.

If it is your first time filing the FAFSA electronically, you will need to apply for a PIN before starting. You can apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.  If the student is considered a dependent, the parent also needs to apply for a PIN so that you both can electronically sign the FAFSA. It takes approximately 3 days to obtain a PIN.

February

Two to 4 weeks after filing your FAFSA, look for your Student Aid Reports (SARs). You can print them off the Web if you filed electronically or they will be mailed to you if you submitted a paper FAFSA.

The Student Aid Report provides the Expected Family Contribution. Check the report over and contact the Ofiice of Financial Aid if you have questions or changes.

March
New York State resident students who filed a FAFSA should also have applied for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Students may apply for TAP electronically at the same time they submit an electronic FAFSA or they will be mailed an Express TAP Application (ETA) to complete and submit.
April
If you have submitted your FAFSA and have been accepted by the Office of Admission or are a returning student, you will receive your Financial Aid Award letter starting this month. Follow the instructions with your award letter to accept or decline your financial aid and to initiate the student loan process.

If you are planning to apply for a Stafford, PLUS, or Alternative Loan, apply now! Loans must be approved in order to use them on your bill as credit.
June
