Students may enroll full-time (15 hours of instruction per week, two full-day academically-related field trips per week) or part-time (one or more courses). Summer courses consist of reading/writing, communication skills and current events. Field trips are an integral part of the program. All students are tested for placement into the appropriate level of study. Residence halls are available for students 18 and older.
Students attending the summer ESL program can use all Concordia facilities, including the Library, Fitness Center and the Schoenfeld Campus Center.
Summer Overview and Photos
Last summer, Concordia welcomed 27 international high school students and chaperones from Japan, Spain, Mexico, Slovenia, and Taiwan to study English and explore the New York City metropolitan area. Each week was filled with classes, sightseeing, and getting to know one another. We studied about American culture, places of interest, and American conversation. We saw many of the important sights including the United Nations building, Grand Central Terminal, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Statue of Liberty. Other fun, yet educational, trips included a visit to the world famous Bronx Zoo, a trip to Madison Square Garden to see the New York Liberty basketball team, a visit to Central Park, and a visit to Battery park. Shopping was always popular, whether it was at the Woodbury Commons shopping center or in the shopping malls of suburban White Plains.
We visited two local Lutheran churches, participated in their worship services, and shared meals with members of the congregations. Everyone participated in a service activity at the Wartburg Senior Community. There were songs in Japanese and Spanish, an Origami demonstration, acting, dancing, and lots of visiting with the senior residents. Read and discuss short stories, texts, news articles and other materials as you learn new information, improve reading skills and increase vocabulary. Learn how to write well-organized paragraphs and essays. Grammar is integrated into the writing.
