Concordia's International Center for English as a Second Language offers a 3-week summer program of language and culture for students 15 and older. The summer session is recommended for international students preparing to study full-time during the academic year, as well as international students wanting an academic and cultural experience in the U.S.

Students may enroll full-time (15 hours of instruction per week, two full-day academically-related field trips per week) or part-time (one or more courses). Summer courses consist of reading/writing, communication skills and current events. Field trips are an integral part of the program. All students are tested for placement into the appropriate level of study. Residence halls are available for students 18 and older.

Students attending the summer ESL program can use all Concordia facilities, including the Fitness Center and the Schoenfeld Campus Center.

Summer 2007 Overview and Photos

Last summer, Concordia welcomed 51 international high school students and chaperones from Italy, Japan, and Spain to study English and explore the New York City metropolitan area. Each week was filled with classes, sightseeing, and getting to know each other. We studied about American culture, places of interest, and American conversation. We saw the sights while we walked along Fifth Avenue, and toured the New York Public Library, where we saw Thomas Jefferson’s original copy of the American Declaration of Independence (1776). Our yellow school bus took us to a New York Yankees baseball game, Battery Park (where we boarded the ferry to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island), Central Park, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Shopping was always popular, whether it was on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan or in the shopping malls of suburban White Plains. We visited Redeemer Lutheran Church in the Bronx, participated in their worship service, and shared a delicious lunch with members of the congregation. Everyone participated in a service activity at the Wartburg Senior Community. There were songs in Italian, Japanese, and Spanish, story telling, dancing, and lots of visiting with the senior residents. After two weeks, the cameras were full of photos to share, and everyone was full of memories of New York. View photos from the Summer 2007 Cultural Immersion Program
