Expo Day Opens Window on the World for Students
Concordia’s Expo Day is a unique opportunity for our students to “learn beyond boundaries” as classes are suspended for a day and faculty members join students for excursions that take advantage of the rich cultural, historical, and educational opportunities near the campus. On the most current Expo Day, Professor Loase from the Math Department hiked up Mt. Hook with four Math Team students, six other students hiked a peak called Anthony’s Nose, and 20 students spent the morning at the United Nations, with tours of the UN Meeting Rooms, special exhibits and a briefing from a member of the UN Counter Terrorism Committee.
Another group spent the day at the Metropolitan Opera, learning about the history of the building and the opera with a trip behind the scenes to get a close-up look at the costumes, wigs and scenery. The Social Sciences Department provided a special viewing of the award-winning movie “God Grew Tired of Us” while the Social Work Department hosted 19 students at the South Street Seaport for the “Bodies” exhibit, a dramatic look at the human body that has been hailed by critics. English students explored the Bowery Poetry Club in Manhattan, toured the East Village, watched a Ken Burns video on Walt Whitman’s Manhattan and experienced a performance by the tour guide of a hip-hop poem created on the spot. All in all, it was quite a day.
