Experiential Learning: City-As-Text Opportunities

FALL 2008

EXL 330 A: NYC – MUSEUM IMMERSION
CRN: 1479

Students tour at least a dozen of the metropolitan museums, including the Met, Cloisters, Guggenheim, Natural History, MOMA, BAM, City of NY. Reflections will include assessments of each museum’s unique features, critical review of special exhibits or displays, and advice on how to experience museums.

EXL 330 B: NYC – SACRED PLACES and SPACES
CRN: 1480

Students explore a variety of churches, cathedrals, temples and mosques along with a variety of locations that are centers for a variety of faith backgrounds. Reflections will include assessments of the similarities and differences of places, the impact of location and the impact on local environments and beyond.

EXL 330 C: NYC – IMAGES OF GOTHAM ON SCREEN
CRN: 1481

Students view films and explore film locations in the home of countless films and documentaries. Reflections will include assessments of the broader significance of the films and locations experienced, how location impacts the film, how the films reflect culture and potential impact of films on society.

EXL 330 D: NYC – MELTING POT OF THE WORLD: An Adventure in Ethnicity
CRN: 1482

Students explore at least a dozen ethnic “neighborhoods” to “taste” the cultures, including food, people, community organizations, customs and rituals. Reflections will include assessments of the unique character of the communities and how they are or are not connected or integrated with surrounding environments.

EXL 330 E: NYC – NAVIGATING METROPOLIS
CRN: 1483

Students will research the development of various modes of city transportation and learn how to use the wide array of transportation (including on foot) available to navigate the city. Reflections will include development of a guide designed to educate others about city transportation developments and to teach others how to navigate the city safely and efficiently.



SPRING 2009

EXL 330 F: NYC – BROADWAY AND BEYOND
CRN: 2498

Students experience at least a dozen theatrical works during the semester, including on, off and off-off Broadway. Reflections will include analysis of the plays, critical reviews of performances, evaluation of venues, and assessment of audience reactions.

EXL 330 G: NYC – HOME OF THE HOMELESS
CRN: 2499

Students explore homeless outreach services, soup kitchens, shelters, etc. along with the agencies that support them. Reflections will include observations about the clients served, assessment of effectiveness of service provided along with recommendations for other service needs and potential collaborative efforts.

EXL 330 H : NYC – CENTRAL PARK PERKS
CRN: 2500

Students examine the role of “green space” in the lives of city-dwellers by exploring the city’s parks, with focus given to 100+ year old Central Park. Reflections will include observations about the space users, assessment of locations and impact on the local environments.

EXL 330 J: NYC – SHAPES AND SIZES
CRN: 2501

Students explore the architectural wonders that outline Manhattan and beyond. Reflections will include identification of unique features of individual architectural edifices, descriptions of structural elements, assessment of locations and cultural impact.

EXL 330 K: NYC – HISTORY IN THE MAKING
CRN: 2502

Using the PBS documentary as a spring board, students explore at least a dozen venues that have been “history makers” for the city, the country and the world. Reflections will include descriptions of what issues or needs gave rise to the venues, assessment of cultural and historical impact, and evaluation of current influence and/or purposes served.
