HISTORICAL NOTE

The American Life Issues Archive (ALIA) is a very extensive collection of life topics ranging between the years of 1985 and 1992. The material was collected by former library director and Atlantic District archivist Kurt Bodling.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection primarily consists of printed material such as news clippings and publications, periodicals and newsletters. The topics include the “Roe versus Wade” case as well as euthanasia subjects involving Dr. Kevorkian etc. The abortion issue covers both pro-life and pre-choice, whereof significantly more pro-life material is available then pre-choice. The collection also houses a variety of magazines mainly pro-life such as Focus on the Family, Lutheran Witness, Citizens, Direct Action News, etc.

The news clippings are not in chronological order and primarily stem from newspapers such as St. Louis Dispatch, New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Post and USA Today. The news clippings need to be photocopied and/or reduced for longevity. Due to their fragile nature the news clippings of this collection should not be open to research by the outside until they are reproduced for more durable access.

The original holdings included extensive mass mailings from pro-life and pro-choice organizations. The entire collection of letters has been opened, the original mailing envelope, return envelope and fundraising forms were discarded and only the original letters are on file. Also included are “Some thoughts about the American Life Issue Archives…” compiled by Rev. Kurt Bodling.

The collection has been arranged in alphabetical order according to the subjects. Folders # 59 through # 68 include not only printed teaching resources but also include a banner used at a pro-life demonstration, a t-shirt, two books and a plastic embryo.
